For more than 25 years, Energy Foundation has supported grantees to help educate policymakers and the general public about the health and economic benefits of a clean energy economy. Our grantees include business, health, environmental, labor, equity, faith, and consumer groups, as well as policy experts, think tanks, universities, and more.

Our comprehensive approach advances energy efficiency and renewable energy in the power, transportation, and buildings sectors. Working together, our Policy and Public Engagement programs focus on developing innovative policies and campaigns to help propel clean energy development in these sectors, while our Strategic Communications Program develops powerful narrative and communications strategies designed to build support for our work regionally and nationwide. Our States and Regions Team is a cross-disciplinary team of policy, communications, and campaign experts dedicated to advancing strong state and regional climate and clean energy policies.

Energy Foundation’s founding office is in San Francisco, CA, with regional offices in Raleigh, NC; Chicago, IL; Washington, DC; and Las Vegas, NV.

Position Summary

Energy Foundation’s complexity and growth offers an experienced Human Resources (HR) generalist the opportunity to provide dynamic, thoughtful leadership and implement best-in-class HR practices that support talent development, employee engagement, and organizational scale. This is a critical enabler role working across the entire organization that aligns people and practice to EF’s core mission and values.

The Senior Director, HR works closely with EF’s Management Team and reports to the COO. As a key partner to the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), the Senior Director, HR plays an instrumental role in guiding hiring, onboarding, training, and retention practices that support EF’s DEI goals. Responsibilities span the HR lifecycle from recruitment to onboarding, compensation, organizational staff planning, talent development and retention, performance evaluation, transitions, and benefits administration. After assessing HR operations, they will select and manage consultants and external partners, as needed, to support talent and HR administration needs.

Working to harmonize operating and program areas across cultures and geographies, the Senior Director, HR needs a “whole organization” approach to ensure programs, policies, and benefits support the development of talent that can scale with EF’s continued growth.

This is a proactive, in-service leadership role that models responsiveness, partnership, flexibility, and collaborative problem-solving. With 25 percent of staff in remote offices, the Senior Director, HR plays a critical role in ensuring that teams in regional offices and working remotely are woven into the fabric of EF and receive the expert HR support they need to be successful.
